Why choose instrumentation over logging
Modern apps often weave together an outstanding underlying architecture of microservices with serverless and container technologies to ensure that your service functions seamlessly for users. Unfortunately, when difficulties develop with your application at 3 a.m., this microservice tapestry appears to be a more complex, twisted knot than a beautiful image created by teams working in unison.
You’ll need to rely on observability practices to focus on where problems originate if you want to get to the base of application performance issues quickly (and get the most rest at night). In the context of microservices, you’ll need to decide if log monitoring or instrumentation makes more sense for your projects. Can use both to track down issues in an existing system and offer information for future initiatives. Which is, nevertheless, the most practical option? Both take time and money that could be better spend on something else.
Why use log monitoring?
Log monitoring, often known as logging, is a technique for tracking and storing data to assure application availability and analyze the performance impact of transformations. It sounds fantastic, and logging is a common practice. More than 73 percent of DevOps teams employ log management and analysis to monitor their systems. However, relying solely on logging as a solution has some severe downsides.
Manual logging is time-consuming and imbalanced
Creating logs is a time-consuming and error-prone operation. You could spend hours entering data to discover that it’s useless in production when you need precise information to figure out what’s wrong with your application.
Adding additional information about debugging processes to log files takes time, and you must first identify every possible piece of data that might be required. (Hopefully, you have a crystal ball handy in case of any unforeseen issues!)
When debugging code, the ideal balance of logs is to add just enough to debug any errors within the program swiftly. You won’t be able to debug if you don’t offer enough records, but if you provide too many, this will become resource-intensive due to the many examination logs. (It’s time to practice staring into that crystal ball once more.)
Logging is difficult to track across multiple services
If your program is like most others, it uses a variety of services, containers, and processes. As a result, understanding all of the relationships between different logs may be necessary for resolving application performance issues. You might be able to link all the threads if you’ve weaved the complete program yourself. Even in this situation, you’ll need to read through the logs’ raw text to recall how everything fits together.
If you need to describe these linkages to someone else, a visual representation of the depth of an issue within the nest of microservices may be the quickest method. However, because logs report text, you’ll have to spend additional time either creating a chart or discussing it with your coworkers.
What is instrumentation?
Adding code to your program to comprehend its internal state is known as instrumentation. Instrumented applications capture data like as metrics, events, logs, and traces to determine what code is doing when responding to active requests (MELT). An instrumented application tracks as much information as possible about the service’s operations and behavior, as opposed to an application that isn’t instrumented and merely employs point-in-time logs. It gives you more information about what’s going on and allows you to see how requests are related.
Why instrumentation is key to modern applications
Instrumentation is an often-overlooked part of software development, despite its importance. Many people believe that it is difficult to get started and that it will not deliver the same return on investment as relying solely on logs. On the other hand, the instrumentation is essential for ensuring that your application is working at its best. It gives you instant access to your program, frequently using charts and graphs to show you what’s going on “behind the scenes.”
Because there is so much data accessible for debugging, you can address immediate on-call problems rapidly with the studied data that instrumentation gives. Instrumentation, on the other hand, can be used to discover more prominent trends that would miss if you only looked at point-in-time log data. Instead of just mending gaps, this can help you improve your application as a whole. It’s crucial to remember that instrumentation is an iterative process that can reveal hidden insights rather than a quick fix for specific problems.
