Oracle/PLSQL GREATEST function returns the highest value in the list of expressions.
Oracle/PLSQL syntax of the GREATEST function
GREATEST( expr1_id, expr2_id, ... expr_n_id )
Parameters and function arguments
- expr1_id, expr2_id, … expr_n_id – expressions the largest value of which is defined by the GREATEST function.
The GREATEST function returns the value of the same data type as expr1.
The GREATEST function can be used in the following versions of Oracle/PLSQL
Oracle 12c, Oracle 11g, Oracle 10g, Oracle 9i, Oracle 8i

Let’s consider some examples of the GREATEST function and learn how to use the GREATEST function in Oracle/PLSQL.
SELECT GREATEST(2, 5, 12, 3) FROM DUAL;
--Result: 12
SELECT GREATEST('2', '5', '12', '3') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 5
SELECT GREATEST('apples', 'oranges', 'bananas') FROM DUAL;
--Result: oranges
SELECT GREATEST('apples', 'applis', 'applas') FROM DUAL;
--Result: applis
